Macadamias may have originated elsewhere, but California growers spent decades discovering which varieties truly thrived here.

Beginning in the 1950s, growers, researchers, and members of the California Macadamia Society planted and evaluated dozens of macadamia varieties throughout Southern California. Their goal was simple: identify the trees that produced exceptional nuts under California's unique growing conditions.

Over time, two cultivars emerged as standout performers—Cate and Beaumont.

Praised for their flavor, adaptability, and performance in California's Mediterranean climate, these varieties helped shape the California macadamia industry and remain among the most celebrated macadamias grown in the state today.
